Our Father

Psalm 68 5

As I write this, we are in our last hours of Father’s day in New Zealand. It is a great day to celebrate the men in our lives who have lead us and guided us and had a positive impact on the person we are now and the person we are becoming. Sadly though, there are many of us who either don’t have a father or don’t have a positive experience from the father we do have. Statistics tell us that nearly a 3rd of  New Zealand children grow up in a fatherless home.  There are 20 confirmed cases of child abuse or neglect happening per day, in many cases this is by an influential male family member. That is a lot of people who need to know what a real father is like.

The good news, the gospel truth, is that we have the most loving father in the world. Whether we have experienced security in the house or abuse, we have a father who will never stop loving us. He will never leave us and He will never forsake us. He created a whole universe and set us in it for His pleasure and He takes delight in us, no matter how much of a brat we may sometimes be.

The next verse after Psalm 68:5 tells us that He sets the lonely in families. He cares for us. It is sometimes hard to believe when the storms are swirling around us and within us but it is true. He is there. Reach out to Him and ask for His loving embrace, His caring provision. He will never deny those who seek Him with all their hearts. Then it will be a truly happy father’s day.
